Veronika's Background Story for Plants and Herbs

Claire is all about Plants and Herbs. She is constantly working with them, collecting, drying, bundling or mixing them to use as healing agents in poultices, teas, creams, and tinctures.

The squares I designed and contribute to the Wrapped in Jamie CAL all have a connection to nature, so choosing a ‘Plants and Herbs’ frame for these squares was a logical decision.

Veronika's Designer's Thoughts for Plants and Herbs

On a practical level, I wanted the border to be expandable to fit squares with more stitches or so that it can be used as a project border (several squares joined together).

In an earlier design I tried to place the leaves closer to, respectively in the corner, as shown here in a test border around another design.

Unfortunately, this design did not work as well as I had planned it, so I kept on modifying it. You can, however, notice, that the mirrored design of the main motif leaves is already there. So is the flower with the cluster bud in the centre that you can find in the final border design.

I replaced the corner leaf with a flower without a stem, not to mix too many motifs on such a narrow space.

In finalising the design, I wondered what the inner structure of the leaves could look like.

I came up with a few ideas,  ranging from including only the line of the shape of the leaf to more and more complicated options.

To test them all, I made a square that had each border in a different style. This way I could best see the difference and pros and cons of each option.

The combination of the options that I liked best is what you have as your ‘Plants and Herbs‘ Square Border, shown here around Square 21 – Dragonfly.

I hope you like it.

Now that you know the background story to Wrapped in Jamie Season 2 Square Border Plants and Herbs, I hope that you are inspired to give it a go. I am curious to see which colours you are going to use or combine and around which of the Season 2 (or even Season 1) squares you are going to add this border.

Alternative Square border options are the classic square border from Season 1, Jamie Claire and Frank

or the official BSC Season 2 SB2 Square Border ‘Scotland’

Each of these borders is available free on the website or you can support the collaboration by purchasing an ad-free PDF booklet including photo tutorials and charts in the shop.

Alternatively, you could add a border specifically designed to match the theme of the Season 2 squares. A bundle of 3 especially designed square borders for our collaboration pattern bundle SB2-1, (containing squares 13 – Royal Stag, 14 – Scottish Cross and 21 – Dragonfly) is available end of January 2022.
