Background Story for the Scotland Square Border

The square designs in Season 2 of the Wrapped in Jamie CAL are all relating to the Theme of Scotland:

Early designs were inspired by the Scottish flag and Celtic knots/braids. While I was happy with the braids, the ‘flag’ did not get the approval stamp and so I had to get back to the drawing board.

Designer's Thoughts

The major change was to simplify the crossing, while keeping the distinctive proportion. Instead of the outline that I tried to reproduce using the doubled up feature, I reduced the design to just one simple combination, yet repeated that over and over again.

That way, the border can be extended outward almost indefinitely, simply by repeating a few rounds.

I added an extra stitch, to make the corners connect, which can easily be dismissed if working from the chart if so desired.

It was partly accidental, partly intentional that I used stitches that are very similar to the ones in the first Square Border (Jamie, Claire and Frank). Instead of a popcorn, a cluster (much quicker to crochet than a popcorn) stands in as a super simple thistle, Scotlands national flower.

The message of the Scotland Square Border is “Scotland, for ever and ever”.

I hope you like it.

Now that you know the background story to Wrapped in Jamie Season 2 Square Border Scotland, I hope that you are inspired to give it a go. I am curious to see which colours you are going to use or combine and around which of the Season 2 (or even Season 1) squares you are going to add this border.

Alternative Square border options are the classic square border from Season 1, Jamie Claire and Frank

or Veronika Gadulová’s contribution,  Season 2 SB3 Square Border ‘Plants and Herbs’

Each of these borders is available free on the website or you can support the mission by purchasing an ad-free PDF booklet including photo tutorials and charts in the shop.

Alternatively, you could add a border specifically designed to match the theme of the Season 2 squares. A bundle of 3 especially designed square borders for our collaboration pattern bundle SB2-1, (containing Squares 13 – Royal Stag, 14 – Scottish Cross and 21 – Dragonfly) is available end of January 2022.
