I often wondered why in overlay crochet ALL single

I often wondered why in overlay crochet ALL single crochets are worked in the back loop only, whether the front loops there will later hold a double crochet or not.
I’m not sure if the picture gives away how different the texture is between the left swatch (where all sc that don’t contain a dc are made in BOTH loops) and the right sample (ALL sc in the back loop only)
It is possibly specific to this pattern or due to the lighter colour, but i can see how the ‘cleaner’ way of using sc in both loops might not always work in the pattern’s favour.
I will try to capture the three different impressions between inset and the two overlay version in a different picture, as each of them has its beauty, special element, and ups and downs.
This is the fun part of designing a pattern and finding out new insights. One ‘mistake’ or discovery can lead to an idea where this ‘mistake’ becomes the celebrated feature. What a blessing!

While Claire is starting to come along beautifully, this is a pattern that demanded to be written too, so i will give it some attention as soon as the secret project to overcome WIJ withdrawal syndrome is finalised.

After learning the difference between overlay mosa

After learning the difference between overlay mosaic crochet and inset mosaic crochet - thanks so much #rosinaplane ! - the Mosaic Art Deco Tile pattern is now coming along nicely in overlay.
The previous version in inset mosaic technique looked a bit stretched, most likely due to the fact that it is worked in 2 rows for each colour and my loose tension.
As is usually the case, even for people who work in a tighter tension, the overlay mosaic technique is more true to the original design in terms of row height and width.
Nevertheless, both versions are already jotted down. Now off to sprucing it up and making it ‘readable’, so it may full the gap until Claire and the rest of the Wrapped in Jamie Season 2 squares are ready to be released

While working on writing the pattern for ‘Claire

While working on writing the pattern for ‘Claire’, I had a design popping in my head again and again, demanding some attention.

If you are a designer, you may be familiar with this kind of distraction. It won’t go away unless you do something about it. So I drew it, tested the pattern repeat and quickly wrote down the pattern.

It is currently filed under ‘Art Deco tile’ until a better name is found. It is one of those patterns that copes well with a big contrast of colours - maybe even needs it.

Worked as inset mosaic crochet using Lincraft Makr cotton 8ply in black and white with a 3.5mm hook to test how it works out.

Looking forward to making a proper project, maybe using some different yarn. As long as it is cotton I’m good.

So many possibilities to play with the Outer Borde

So many possibilities to play with the Outer Border of the Season 1 Wrapped in Jamie Project Border!

Here is a little preview of the modified/simplified Border for a project where squares are connected with a slim join, like for example the zig-zag slip stitch join used in this project.

The border can be adjusted to fit any number of square layouts - 3 x 4, 2 x 6, 1 x 12 or square numbers - for any project where the last round of each square has a stitch count of 59 stitches and the join only adds 1 additional stitch.
